Nottingham Trent University launches pre-degree courses for overseas students through new International College
- world class partnership links to strategic plan
- flexible, tailored programmes for international students
Nottingham Trent University (NTU) today (15 November 2004) reveals plans to open the Nottingham Trent International College on campus through a new partnership. The college will provide tailored, flexible academic tuition to international students wanting to reach equivalent standards to UK entrants to undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the university. The college will also provide specialist English language support to prepare students to study effectively once they join the university's undergraduate and masters courses, as well as social and cultural support to help students integrate into the university and local community. The college will be accepting applicants for 2005 entry.
As the UK becomes increasingly recognised as a global leader in university education, the college will meet the growing international demand from Asia, as well as other areas such and the Middle East and Africa. The initial focus will be on business studies and computing - subjects in which Nottingham Trent University has a strong track record - with additional subjects planned for the future. It will offer three levels of study:
Foundation programme (pre-undergraduate level): a comprehensive course for international students to reach A-level equivalent standard. Successful graduates of the foundation programme move into the diploma programme
Diploma programme (undergraduate level): a fast-track, focused course which prepares students to reach the equivalent standard for entry into the second year of undergraduate degree courses at Nottingham Trent University. The courses ensure that rigorous academic standards, and the right level of English language skills, are met
Pre-masters programme (postgraduate level): an intensive course open to students with international degrees who wish to supplement their studies with a UK Masters degree. Typically, students would be moving into a new academic discipline or would benefit from the additional support offered by the college, particularly in developing language skills and addressing cultural differences
All student work is examined internally and moderated externally, to UK standards. To join the courses, students will have to secure an offer from the college and will receive a conditional offer from the university itself.
The new college has been made possible through partnership with Kaplan, Inc. one of the world's leading educational companies, with 69 colleges in the US and abroad, as well as professional training, exam preparation for university students, and educational programmes for children in elementary school. Kaplan also owns the London-based Financial Training Company, a leading provider of corporate training in the UK and Asia; and Dublin Business School, Ireland's largest private undergraduate institution.
The partnership with Kaplan, a company recognised for its high quality programmes, reflects NTU's drive to ensure rigorous academic standards in all its collaborative ventures and to work with world class partners as part of its new strategic plan, launched this year. Over five years the college expects to serve some 1,000 additional overseas students.
Professor Peter Jones, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Business Development at Nottingham Trent University, says:
"The launch of Nottingham Trent International College is a landmark occasion. Not only do the courses provide rigorous building blocks for securing globally respected UK degrees, they also provide the language and cultural tools necessary for overseas students to study and integrate successfully.
"Nottingham Trent has always been a dynamic and versatile institution and we're delighted to be able to offer this complete package to students from across the globe. The partnership with Kaplan will provide tangible benefits for all our students. For example, the international students will help us build a cosmopolitan and multicultural environment in which all our students will benefit.
"The establishment of a Nottingham Trent International College is indicative of the university's strategic commitment to collaborations with high quality partners from across the world. The university is continually reviewing its course portfolio to ensure that it delivers opportunities that offer even greater international reach. "

Nottingham Trent University
Nottingham Trent is a large, diverse and vibrant modern university. Its mission is to deliver education and research that shapes lives and society.
It has around 25,000 students studying within ten schools on three campuses, one of which is right in the heart of city centre. Nottingham Trent's entry standards are consistently high and it is one of the most popular UK universities in terms of applications received.
The university has an enviable national and international reputation built upon the excellence of its teaching methods, research, collaborative activities and consultancy. It has become one of the UK's top institutions for graduate employment - around 97% of the students graduating in 2003 gained jobs or went on to further study within six months of completing their courses.
Flourishing links with industry and the fact that over half its academic programmes feature work placements for up to a year (the highest number of any university in the country) show that Nottingham Trent has set out to make its mark as 'the entrepreneurial university'.
Reflecting its diversity, Nottingham Trent delivers wide-ranging opportunities for research. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) the university received four grade '5's - placing it firmly at the top of the post '92 universities.
