Kaplan and International Code Council (ICC) Form Strategic Marketing Alliance

Change in Professional Engineer Licensing Exam Brings Together Leaders From Test Prep and Construction Building Code Industries

CHICAGO, IL (March 16, 2004) - With the Professional Engineering (PE) licensing exam undergoing content change, test preparation leader Kaplan announced a strategic partnership with the International Code Council (ICC) to provide industry-leading exam prep resources for engineers. The ICC, a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes use the International Codes developed by the ICC.

The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), the governing council for engineer examinations has updated its list of recommended standards to include the 2000 International Building Code® (IBC) as a reference for the PE exam. This becomes effective in April 2004. In anticipation of this change, Kaplan AEC-Education, Kaplan's business unit serving the architecture, engineering and construction industries, has partnered with the ICC to make available to PE exam candidates current code-related information, namely the UBC-IBC Comparison and Cross-Reference Guide and the 2000 IBC. Additionally, following Kaplan AEC's recent acquisition of publisher Engineering Press, the partnership also creates a series of engineering exam preparation titles by prestigious engineering authors that will benefit the engineering community and educators.

"The combination of Kaplan's test prep leadership, NCEES's expertise and Engineering Press's premium content provide an unparalleled educational resource for professional engineers," said Eric Cantor, president of Kaplan's professional services division, which includes Kaplan AEC.

"Working with Kaplan, a worldwide leader in educational services, provides a perfect fit for ICC in offering industry-leading study materials for the P.E. exam. The examinees and engineering community will benefit from this partnership," said Mark Johnson, ICC Vice President of Business Development.

Kaplan has been providing educational and career services to students, schools, professionals, and businesses worldwide for more than 65 years. Kaplan is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company (NYSE: WPO) and its largest revenue generator, with $838 million in revenue in 2003.
