Robert Lane Named CFO of Kaplan, Inc.

NEW YORK, May 22, 2003 - Kaplan, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company (WPO), announced today that it has appointed Robert Lane to the position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO), overseeing all of Kaplan's financial operations.

Since joining Kaplan as Controller in 1994, Lane has led efforts to update Kaplan's financial functions, and to establish efficiencies that have resulted in significantly improved management of operating results. He has also been instrumental in designing and implementing the growth strategy of a company that, since his joining, has grown both organically as well as through acquisition. Since 1992, Kaplan has expanded from $75 million in revenue to $621 million in 2002 and could become The Washington Post Company's largest revenue producer as early as this year.

"Bob has played an integral role in Kaplan's transformation from a test preparation company to a broad scale, leading provider of educational products and services," said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc. "Under his leadership, we've established systems enabling the efficient management of Kaplan's financial operations to support the company's phenomenal growth. I can think of no one better suited or more deserving to serve as Kaplan's financial leader as we continue to grow."

In addition to providing strategic financial leadership, Lane's responsibilities include managing and maintaining - with the assistance of more than 100 financial staff at Kaplan's various operations - the integrity and accuracy of all Kaplan, Inc.'s financial information, which includes numerous operating units in an array of businesses including post-secondary education, professional training, online learning, publishing, international programs, and K12 programs for schools and families.

Prior to joining Kaplan, Lane served as Vice President and Controller at Children's Television Workshop from 1986 to 1993. Previously, he held financial management positions with the Royal Dutch Shell Group and began his career as an auditor with Arthur Andersen.

Lane is a CPA and has an M.B.A. in Finance from New York University's Stern School of Business and a B.B.A. in Finance from Notre Dame.
