Gary Kerber Named Vice Chairman of Kaplan, Inc.

NEW YORK, May 22, 2003
- Kaplan, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company (WPO), announced today that it has appointed Gary Kerber to the position of Vice Chairman, expanding his current role as CEO of Kaplan's Higher Education division. In this capacity, he will provide guidance to Kaplan's Chairman and CEO, Jonathan Grayer and President and COO, Andrew Rosen, on a variety of Kaplan business issues.

Last year, Kaplan Higher Education's revenue of $250 million comprised roughly 40% of the company's total 2002 revenue of $621 million. The division currently has 47 schools in 15 states serving some 22,000 students in a range of career-oriented programs, and also has a growing online business which currently provides degree and certificate programs to more than 9,000 students in areas including law, criminal justice, health care, information technology and financial planning.

Kerber joined Kaplan in the summer of 2000 with the company's acquisition of Quest Education Corporation, which became the foundation of Kaplan Higher Education. As founder and CEO of Quest Education, Kerber grew Quest into a thriving, $115 million business. At the time of its acquisition, Quest had 30 schools located in 11 states serving 13,400 students.

"Gary has been a leading driver in our higher education vision over the past three years," said Jonathan Grayer, Chairman and CEO of Kaplan, Inc. "Since we acquired his company, he has had an enormous impact on Kaplan's performance and culture. Gary's new role will enable us to benefit from the broadened scope of his insight and leadership."

Prior to founding Quest Education, Kerber, a veteran of the health care industry, was CEO of Kimberly Service, Inc., a national nursing service corporation. In addition, he spent 13 years with American Hospital Supply Corporation, where he held positions in sales, marketing, and general management. His work experience also includes a tenure at Proctor & Gamble. Kerber began his career in management consulting, with Touche Ross & Company in Denver, Colorado in the management consulting division.

Kerber received his B.S. and M.B.A. from the University of Illinois. He currently resides in Alpharetta, GA with his wife, Joella.
