Free Kaplan Seminars Reveal Admissions Secrets to New York City's Top Public High Schools

Kaplan Experts Discuss Strategies for Gaining Admission to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech

New York, NY, April 22, 2003 -- Admission to New York City's elite specialized public high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech, is determined by just one number - the score on the New York City Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). To familiarize students and families with this high-stakes test and the highly competitive admissions process for the six Specialized High Schools, Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, the nation's oldest and largest provider of test preparation and admissions services, will be offering free Specialized High Schools Admissions Seminars at locations throughout the city.

Of the 21,000 students who applied to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech, in 2001, only 2,500 were admitted. Although the city has added three new specialized high schools-High School for Math, Science & Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College and Queens High School for the Sciences at York College-competition for admission, which is determined solely by SHSAT, is expected to be fierce.

"Over the past decade, Kaplan has helped thousands of students excel on the high-stakes SHSAT," said Dan McGrew, Director of Pre-High School and Pre-College Programs, Kaplan Test Prep. "We are pleased to take some of the stress out of this important exam by sharing our expertise with students and families at these free events."

A Kaplan expert will discuss the Specialized High Schools application process and provide detailed information and tips on the test required for admission. Seminars will be offered in Spanish, Mandarin and Russian in select areas. The SHSAT will be administered this fall to eighth- and ninth-grade students. To register for the seminar or to learn more about Kaplan's courses and services, call 1-800-KAP-TEST or visit www.kaptest.com/highschool.
