Kaplan's NY Good Sports Students Raise SAT Scores 177 Points & Qualify for NCAA Scholarships

Kaplan and New York Cares Invite Applicants to Apply for 2002

New York, October 22, 2001 -- Kaplan, Inc. and New York Cares announce that students in the 2001 Kaplan/NY Cares Good Sports Athletic Program increased their SAT scores by an average of 177 points, a record for the program, with seven students raising their scores by more than 200 points, and two of those students achieving increases of 300 points or more. The program helps highly motivated, low-income high school athletes in New York City public schools prepare for college and qualify for National College Athletic Association (NCAA) scholarships.

New York City public school students are invited to apply now for the 2002 program. Applications for the 2002 Good Sports program are currently available by contacting high school athletic directors, coaches or guidance counselors. The program is open to New York City public high school juniors and seniors who play an NCAA recognized sport and are committed to attending college. Applications must be postmarked by November 16, 2001 to be considered for the program.

"The Good Sports Program gave me the confidence and skills I needed to tackle the SAT," said Tiffany Tomlinson. "By raising my score, I qualified for an athletic scholarship and am attending Penn State University this fall. This achievement would not have been possible without Kaplan's help."

The Kaplan/New York Cares Good Sports program, now in its fifth year, has been increasingly successful in helping participants raise their SAT scores and expand their college admissions and scholarship opportunities. The program is offered every year to college-bound high school juniors and seniors at no cost and provides one-on-one tutoring, college admissions guidance, and confidence building events with professional athletes and college coaches.

"Getting a college degree today is more important than ever," said Chad Schaedler, Executive Director, PreCollege Programs for Kaplan, Inc. "Yet for many students, a college education is out of reach. We're extremely pleased to be able to work with New York Cares on such a high-impact program."

A joint community outreach project of Kaplan, Inc. and New York Cares, Good Sports complies with applicable NCAA legislation. The New York program is endorsed by the New York City Public Schools Athletic League. The program has prepared more than 100 athletes for the SAT.

More importantly, all gained admission to four-year colleges, including such schools as North Western University, Rice University, Syracuse University, and Wellesley College.
