Kaplan and J Eduline announce new center in Korea
Kaplan Center Korea to Provide Kaplan Test Prep to Korean Students and Professionals

New York (March 8, 2001) - Kaplan, Inc., a leading education and career services company, has announced plans to expand its services in Korea this May in conjunction with J EduLine (formerly Joinslearning), the educational subsidiary of Joongang Ilbo, a leading Korean media corporation. J EduLine will launch a new "Kaplan Center Korea" in Seoul this May, using Kaplan's test preparation courses and materials under a license to serve students and professionals who wish to study in America.

"Kaplan's new and expanded operations in Korea are an integral part of our international strategy," said Greg Barattini, Vice President of Global Affairs, Kaplan, Inc. "Kaplan's world leadership in test prep and J EduLine's prominence in the Korean education market enables us to provide world-class service to the well-established and ever-growing number of Korean students and professionals wishing to gain access to America's education system."

The new Kaplan Center Korea, opening in the heart of one of Seoul's prime business districts, will provide test preparation courses for the entrance exams to American college (SAT) business school (GMAT), graduate school (GRE) and law school (LSAT) as well as professional licensing exams for nurses (NCLEX) and doctors (USMLE) who wish to practice in the U.S. The center will also prepare students for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), required for admissions to American institutions as well as some government and local organizations abroad. In addition, Kaplan Center Korea will provide resources for Korean students through every stage of the study abroad process, from researching American schools to preparing applications to finding jobs when students return to Korea after finishing their studies in America.

"The similarities between Kaplan and J EduLine, as leading educational subsidiaries of multi-faceted media corporations, give us the understanding and motivation to work together to help students achieve their educational goals," said Jinki Kim, President of J EduLine. "We have seen such high demand from students in Korea who wish to study in the U.S. but need preparation and guidance. Our center will provide one stop service for study abroad for students and professionals who wish to study in America. Using Kaplan's extensive resources, we can provide unparalleled educational services to help these students reach their goals."

According to the Institute of International Education, more than 500,000 international students studied in the U.S. in the 1999-2000 school year, an increase of 4.8% over the 1998-1999 school year. The number of Korean students studying in the U.S. jumped by 5.1% over last year, also according to the Institute of International Education, and that number is expected to increase.

To keep pace with the increasing demand for American university degrees, Kaplan is expanding its hallmark test preparation services to reach more markets overseas, with thirty-five locally owned and operated centers in 15 countries outside the U.S. and new centers scheduled to open in Egypt, Singapore, Turkey and Venezuela. Kaplan's International Programs unit offers students and professionals a full range of programs including intensive English instruction, test preparation, university preparation and professional English training. Kaplan International also provides services to government and corporate sponsors including placement at top American universities, fellowship management, academic monitoring and reporting and financial administration. International students and professionals either travel to Kaplan International's own eleven U.S. centers or enroll in one of Kaplan's licensed centers abroad.
