Meet the Word Whiz! This humorous word-loving character offers students a fresh new approach to building a strong vocabulary.

(New York, August 2001)--Today, the working vocabulary of an average American fourteen-year-old is less than half of what it was in 1945. Many educators believe that weak vocabulary skills are the reason many students are unable to meet standards on the New York State 8th Grade Tests. The Word Whiz's Guide to New York State Middle School Vocabulary from Kaplan Publishing (September 2001; $8.00) helps New York students master the vocabulary they will need to succeed on tests, in the classroom, and in life, by linking learning with topics that students are interested in, from allowances to video games.

Kaplan is proud to launch this new series. Here is a brief bio on the Word Whiz:

Who: My name is Stan. Stan Hattan. As you can probably tell from my name, I'm from New York, NY. I'm in the eighth grade, and at my school I am famous for two things--my fastball and my vocabulary.

Favs: Baseball, reading, writing, and paying attention to words in everyday life.

Creator: Kaplan Publishing and Chris Kensler. Chris is also the author of several other books, including Study Smart Junior, which received the Parent's Choice Award, as well as Kaplan's SAT Verbal Velocity and SAT Math Mania. He has been a writer/editor for a daytime drama publication, a content director for a group of web sites, and is currently editor of an art magazine.
