 Kaplan Expands Distance Learning Division
Acquires National Institute for Paralegal Arts and Sciences,
A Leading Provider of Distance Education Degrees and Certificates

New York, April 6, 1999- In a move that will expand its presence in the distance learning arena, Kaplan Educational Centers has announced the acquisition of National Institute for Paralegal Arts and Sciences (NIPAS). NIPAS is a leading accredited distance education institution offering diplomas, certificates and degrees in paralegal studies and legal nurse consulting. NIPAS will join Kaplan's distance learning division which currently includes Concord School of Law, the nation's first online law school.

"We see tremendous opportunities in distance education, and we will leverage the Kaplan brand as we acquire and build new programs," said Jonathan Grayer, Kaplan's president and CEO. "We intend to provide a full array of licensing, certificate and degree-granting programs. For decades, Kaplan has been the leader in helping students get into law school, and now we can help others enter the legal industry. NIPAS will be a valuable addition to our distance learning division."

For 23 years, NIPAS has served working adults seeking continuing education and career advancement in the field of law. In addition to its degree programs, NIPAS offers specialty certificate programs for paralegals in real estate law, law office management, litigation assistantship and legal research. Its programs are accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council. Students use textbooks and communicate with full-time faculty via e-mail, telephone, chat rooms, message boards and fax.

"The paralegal field is going to experience exponential growth in the next decade," said NIPAS CEO Richard Capezzali. "Kaplan recognizes the huge potential for distance education programs. We're looking forward to helping Kaplan build its growing array of continuing education and professional services."

Capezzali will run NIPAS from its headquarters in Boca Raton, FL. For information about NIPAS programs, prospective applicants may call 1-800-669-2555 or visit NIPAS.
