HAGERSTOWN BUSINESS COLLEGE LAUNCHES NEW BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMS
School is First to Offer Four-year Bachelor’s Program in Washington County
HAGERSTOWN, Md., June 25, 2007—Hagerstown Business College is offering its first bachelor’s degree programs. Enrollment for the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology programs is now open. Classes for these programs are scheduled to begin July 16, 2007.
Approved to offer bachelor’s degrees by the Maryland Higher Education Commission in March 2007, Hagerstown Business College is now the only school in Washington County to offer bachelor’s degrees to students who have not already attained an associate’s degree. Students holding associate degrees also have the opportunity to pursue a bachelor’s degree through an additional two years of study.
“Our new bachelor’s degree programs will enable the college to help address a critical need in Washington County—that of improving the educational attainment level and providing a quality workforce for the businesses of our region,” said W. Christopher Motz, president of Hagerstown Business College. “Our bachelor’s degree programs are the only four-year degree programs in the county that can be started and completed at the same institution—a service we are very proud to be providing to the citizens of Washington County.”
According to the 2000 US Census, only 14.6 percent of Washington County residents hold a bachelor’s degree, which is less than half of the state average (31.4 percent).
The Bachelor of Science in Business Administration prepares students for a variety of positions in the business field. Students will choose concentrations in accounting or management in addition to completing courses in subjects like economics, marketing and finance.
The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology trains students to apply system and technical solutions to hardware and software problems. Students will choose concentrations in either web development or network security in addition to completing courses in networking and PC repair.
To help prepare students for a variety of career paths in their field, bachelor’s degree students in both programs will take general education courses in subjects including humanities, math, fine arts, English, social science and natural science.
In addition to classroom work, eligible students can participate in an externship for course credit. Externships allow students to apply skills obtained through classroom instruction to actual work situations. Externship students may be placed with local businesses or government offices to gain on-the-job training experience and evaluations.
Hagerstown Business College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). The campus also offers 12 associate degree programs and eight certificate programs in fields including business, legal studies, allied health, technology and graphic design.
