Christopher Caywood Promoted to President of Kaplan Legal Education

Davenport, IA, March 30, 2010—Kaplan University, a leading provider of online postsecondary education, today announced the promotion of Christopher Caywood to president of Kaplan Legal Education (KLE), which offers a breadth of online law, public policy and public safety related certificate and degree programs.
Caywood succeeds Barry Currier, who also served as dean of Concord Law School, a pioneer in online legal education. The University is conducting a nationwide search for a new Concord Law School dean.

“Dean Currier led the evolution of our legal education programs and strengthened the reputation of Concord Law School in both legal and academic circles,” said Gregory Marino, president of the Kaplan University Group. “I’m confident that Chris Caywood’s vision and talent will further our quest to become the leader in law-related education in the United States.”

Currier will continue to serve Concord Law School as a professor and dean emeritus, helping to facilitate new initiatives that build upon the school’s reputation for high quality, innovative legal education.
He joined Concord Law School in 2004 with 30 years of experience in legal education and practice. Currier helped facilitate the law school’s merger with Kaplan University in 2007, making it the only wholly online law school that is part of a regionally accredited university. He’s also developed partnerships with traditional law schools, including Loyola University School of Law, which joined forces with Concord to offer an online Master of Jurisprudence in Health Law degree for health care professionals.

Currier came to Concord from the American Bar Association in Chicago, where he served as Deputy Consultant on Legal Education, working on the law school approval and review process for the accreditation of U.S. juris doctor programs. Prior to that, he served in various academic and leadership positions at law schools in the U.S. and abroad.

Caywood previously served as chief operating officer of KLE, which includes Kaplan University’s School of Legal Studies, School of Criminal Justice and Concord Law School.

Caywood joined Kaplan University four years ago as a vice president, guiding operations for the University’s criminal justice, legal studies, education and nursing programs. Last year, he became chief operating officer for the new KLE. He earned his juris doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School, bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and an MBA from the University of Chicago. Before joining Kaplan University, Caywood spent two decades working first in private practice for major national law firms and then in a number of management and leadership roles in the health care and retail industries. He is a member of the Illinois and Massachusetts bars.
